WANG KUI ART STUDIO
Kui is a Canadian artist based in Alberta. His work has been widely exhibited both nationally and internationally in his native China.
In 1982 Kui received his BFA degree at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, in Chongqine, China. He taught in the same institute for five years after graduation.
In 1987, Kui was selected as one of three Chinese artists for the government exchange program at the Banff Centre of Fine Arts . While at the centre Kui had the opportunity to gain awareness of the significance of western culture on art. He stayed in the centre for one year.
Since that time he has been expanding his horizon in art by constantly improving his skills and experimenting with new techniques. He participated in many competitions and exhibitions.
He was nominated for the Governor General’s Award in 1996. In the same year he was short listed for the Governor General’s Award for Children’s Illustration for his work on the book “The wise washerman” This book was featured on the cover of Hyperion Press book list for the same year.
Kui was commissioned by the Alberta Ballet to produce 3 Christmas cards and a calendar for the year 2002 .
Kui has always been fascinated by the relationships between people , and the relationship between people and nature. He passionately portrayed these themes through lines and colors in various media.
He is masterful in the timing of his washes in water based media. The rich interplay of colors and tonal values elevates his expressive pieces .
In oil based media he innovates in the use of Chinese calligraphy techniques in addition to traditional brush strokes.
Kui's art embraces both the western and eastern influences . They are evocative, infused with light and shadows and filled with
tranquility.
